The Program
In this fast-paced, electronic world, Walden West allows youngsters to relax
during a nature-based, fun-filled week. Led by veteran staff, youngsters, in
grades 2 through 7, participate in a myriad of activities that build
self-confidence and long-term friendships. Schedule // Day Camp information letter for

The Staff
The camp is directed and run by the Walden West Outdoor School staff. These
staff members bring years of summer camp experience and hold certificates in
First Aid, CPR, Water Safety Instruction, and Challenge Course Safety. They
supervise our weekly enrollment of 150 campers, and are assisted by 20
experienced volunteer counselors from local high schools, colleges, as well as
the ranks of our own former campers.

Activities and Age Groups
Upon arrival on the first Monday morning, campers are placed according to age
and grade level in groups of 15 to 20 and assigned to a staff member. Campers
participate in a wide variety of activities including hiking, swimming, archery,
arts and crafts, gardening, games, sports, singing, nature study, and the
Challenge Course. All activities emphasize the enjoyment and appreciation of the
outdoors, as well as socializing, cooperative living, and team work. Campers
spend mornings with their assigned groups and, during the afternoons, campers
are free to choose from the many activities.

Challenge Course
The Challenge Course is made up of the Climbing Tower for all ages and the
High Ropes Course for 10 to 12 years of age. The Climbing Tower offers campers a
chance to hone their climbing skills. The Course is a maze of cables, ropes, and
platforms suspended high in the trees. All participants wear harnesses and
helmets at all times and proceed through the course in complete safety, while
experiencing the perception of risk. Campers develop self-confidence, learn
group cooperation, face and overcome fears and improve physical coordination.
The Challenge Course meets or exceeds all safety requirements set by the
Association for Challenge Course Technology.

BBQ and Overnight
On Thursday evening campers and their families and friends are welcome to
join us for a BBQ dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. The price of the camper's dinner
is included in camp enrollment fee. An additional $10 is requested for each
person attending with the camper. The BBQ is followed at 7:00 with a lively
campfire presentation featuring songs, skits, and a raffle. Campers are then
invited to our optional overnight camp-out with songs, stories, a night-hike, a
marshmallow roast, followed by sleeping under the stars!

Transportation
Bring your campers to Walden West for check-in on Monday morning between 8:00
and 9:00 a.m. For the remainder of the week, our staff will transport campers to and
from Saratoga School (14592 Oak Street, Saratoga 95070). Afternoon bus drop-offs
begin Monday at 4:30 p.m. After 5:00 p.m., campers will be transported from
Saratoga School to Walden West. Morning bus pick-up is from 8:15 until 8:30 a.m.
and begins Tuesday. Due to the overnight camp-out on Thursday, there will be no
bus service Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

Early Drop-offs and Extra Hours
For those parents who need to drop off their children earlier, we offer
extended hours. Early morning drop-off begins at 8:00 a.m. Afternoon extra hours
end at 6:00 p.m. If you require this service, please notify us on Monday during
the check-in period. The drop-off and extra-hours services are free, although
there is a late charge of $1 per minute after 6:00 p.m. Extra hours
supervision is at Walden West.
